CARE OF THE BODY’S INDIVIDUAL PARTS: THROAT AND TONSILS

Like your nose and mouth, your throat does not need sprays, gargles, or lozenges to keep it healthy. Avoid them because their regular use may cause irritation.

Sore throats are almost as common as colds for a certain amount of inflammation in the throat usually results from the cold itself. They may also be due to irritation caused by excessive smoking. If cutting down on your smoking, and gargling every two to three hours with a third of a glassful of warm water containing two crushed aspirin tablets, does not bring relief in a few days, visit your doctor or a hospital clinic. Serious conditions may begin with a sore throat.

Cancer of the lip, mouth, and throat are definitely connected with smoking, especially heavy smoking. This does not mean that everyone who smokes must live in fear of cancer, but it does mean that smokers should be alert to any sores of the lip, mouth, or throat and should have any stubborn irritation checked quickly by a doctor.

Any acutely sore throat accompanied by fever in either an adult or a child may mean trouble. It is an early symptom of the following diseases: diphtheria, scarlet fever, strep throat, and tonsillitis.
