HEALTH AND VACATIONS: INOCULATIONS

Everyone going to the country should have an inoculation against typhoid fever. When there is any doubt about the purity of the water supply, be sure to boil your drinking water for ten minutes. If you object to the flat taste of boiled water, pour it from the container into the glass and back again several times.

Do not drink unpasteurized milk. If pasteurized milk cannot be obtained, boil the milk. Children sometimes object to the taste of boiled milk, but it can be disguised by chocolate syrup or vanilla.

I advise my patients to be immunized against tetanus, especially if they are going to be in areas in which there is a special risk of being infected by the tetanus bacillus. It is found in and about stables and in garden soil treated with animal manure. It usually enters the body through a deep wound such as is made by stepping on a nail. Remember: any deep wound requires the immediate attention of a doctor.

If you are going abroad, it is necessary to have an International Certificate of Vaccination saying that you have been protected against smallpox within the last three years. Injections for typhoid fever and cholera are advisable before travelling or stopping over in Asian countries.

If you are going to areas where the anopheles mosquito exists, ask your doctor for ways of guarding against the disease.
